Getting the Most From Your NDIS Plan
Your NDIS plan is a powerful tool — but only if you know how to use it effectively. Here are practical strategies to help you maximise your funding and achieve better outcomes.
1. Understand Your Plan Categories
Your NDIS plan is divided into support categories. Understanding what each category covers helps you make informed decisions about how to spend your funding.
The three main budget types are:
- Core Supports — everyday activities, transport, consumables
- Capacity Building — therapy, training, plan management, support coordination
- Capital — assistive technology, home modifications, vehicles
2. Consider Plan Management
Plan management gives you the flexibility to choose any provider (registered or unregistered) while someone else handles the paperwork. It's funded separately and doesn't reduce your other supports.
3. Use Your Support Coordinator
If you have support coordination in your plan, use it. Your support coordinator can help you find providers, navigate the system, and prepare for plan reviews.
4. Keep Records
Document your supports, outcomes, and any unmet needs throughout the year. This evidence is invaluable at plan review time.
5. Don't Let Funding Go Unused
If you're not using all your funding, talk to your support coordinator or plan manager. There may be supports you're entitled to that you haven't explored.
6. Prepare for Your Plan Review
Start preparing at least 2 months before your review. Gather evidence, write down your goals, and consider what's working and what isn't.
